The solo, choreographed by Mikhail Fokine, danced to music by Christian Sinding orchestrated by Alexander Taneyev, was included in the divertissement entitled <i>Les Orientales</i> presented by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes at the Paris Opera on 25 June 1910.\n\nMichel Fokine's choreography and the costume designed by Leon Bakst was inspired by the visit of Cambodian or 'Siamese' dancers to St Petersburg in 1900. Jacques Emile Blanche painted Nijinsky in this costume and there is an important series of action photographs taken by Eugene Druet in the open air in Paris. These show Nijinsky performing the dance, and capture him hovering in mid-air. The solo is also referred to as <i>Danse Siamoise</i> or <i>Siamese Dance</i>.
