Mercure was an experimental work with book and choreography by Léonide Massine, music by Erik Satie and sets and costumes by Pablo Picasso, created for Comte Etienne de Beaumont’s Soirée de Paris on 15 June 1924. It was acquired by the Ballets Russes and Diaghilev’s company gave 4 performances of the ballet 2 each in Paris and London making it the least performed ballet in the Company’s repertoire. The photographs by Sasha appear to have been taken in conjunction with performances at the Prince’s Theatre in July 1927.\r\nIn the third tableau, a feast with Bacchus, 'Mercury invents new dances to charm the guests, and discovers Letters. Prosperpina is among the guests. Pluto abducts her with the aid of Chaos'.
