The photograph shows Lydia Sokolova partnered by Anton Dolin surrounded by the gigolos in their royal blue bathing costumes and the 'poules' young women in their long-sleeved brouwn costumes. The ballet was choreographed by Bronislava Nijinska to music by Darius Milhaud, with a set designed by Henri Laurens and costumes by Coco Chanel.\nGiven its fashionable appearance Le Train bleu featured in picture-spreads in illustrated periodicals. Most reviews were favourable – energetic, inventive, humorous were discriptive adjectives used. In The Diaghilev Ballet in London (1940) Cyril Beaumont recalled that ‘The formalised setting, with a hint of cliffs, bathing tents, and seascape, was effective, but the costumes – mostly woollen bathing suits – were uninteresting’\r\n","physicalDescription":"Stage photograph of a scene from Le Train Bleu, performed by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, June 1924.
