Lydia Sokolova as the bathing bell La Perlouse wears a costume completed by a bathing cap and ‘little rubber slippers which most women wore for bathing in those days’ an which proved most uncomfortable to dance in. Bronislava Nijinska as the Tennis Player modelled her role on Suzanne Lenglen who at the age of 15 had become the tennis champion of France and was singles' and doubles' champion at Wimbledon between 1919 and1924. Her ‘sensational leaps’ on court delighted her audiences. Anton Dolin as Le Beau Gosse or handsome boy, essentially played himself with his love of performing acrobatics. \n\nLe Train Bleu was set on a bathing beach and its action was inspired by fashionable sports. During the course of the ballet an unseen aeroplane flies overhead dropping pamphlets; the dancers put on sunglasses and they take photographs with box cameras. Cyril Beaumont in The Diaghilev Ballet in London (1940) noted that: ‘The formalised setting, with a hint of cliffs, bathing tents, and seascape, was effective, but the costumes – mostly woollen bathing suits – were uninteresting’\r\n \n\n","physicalDescription":"Stage photograph of Le Train Bleu, performed by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, June 1924.
