The ballet was choreographed by Serge Lifar to music by Igor Stravinsky, with set and costumes designed by Michel Larionov. It was first performed at the théâtre Sarah Bernhardt, Paris, on 21 May 1929 and was also performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London 15 July 1929. In total it received 10 performances.\n\nRenard was based on a Russian folk tale the essence was how a cat and goat repeatedly rescue a cockerel from a wily fox in a series of disguises As the programme notes, Stravinsky’s directive that ‘the piece ought to be played by clowns, dancers or acrobats’ and the programme note observes that ‘Renard is a “burlesque story played and sung” of which the actors are on stage and the singers in the orchestra. The actors do not speak; it is the singers who speak for them.’ In Lifar's production the roles of the Goat, Cat and Cockerel were double cast and performed by both dancers and professional acrobats. \n\r\nThe costumes designed by Larionov are tight-fitting of the style worn by acrobats and the charaters identified by their headdresses, make up and decorative details. The Goat (Bouc) and Cat (Chat) have their names boldly printed on their costumes. The double casting of dancers and acrobats enabled characters to leave and enter the stage at the same time. The Times 16 July 1929 described Renard as ‘sheer amusement and enjoyment’.\n\nThe photograph shows the three acrobats (who wear boots while their dancer counterparts wear ballet slippers), as the Cat (Adolph Hierlinger), the Goat (Bernardo Agustino) and the Cock (Louis Agustino).","physicalDescription":"The photograph shows three acrobats posed on the stage at Covent Garden with the Goat carrying the Cat on his back and the Cock in front.
