She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.\r\n\r\nThe dog shown on the front of this sheet is thought to be ‘Nip’, a black and white terrier Beatrix Potter owned following her move to the Lake District. She noted that Nip was ‘very good’ and that she was bred at Brothers Water. Potter took the opportunity to sketch her pets in childhood, as a young woman, and, as here, later in life.\r\n\r\nThe pencil sketch on the back of the sheet has been identified as showing an arch in Hawkshead, a village not far from Potter’s Lakeland home in Near Sawrey. The arch reappears in the background on one of Potter’s illustrations for The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse (Frederick Warne, 1918). \r\n","physicalDescription":"Study of a black and white terrier curled up on an orange rug (recto) and sketch of an arch at Hawkshead (verso)","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Potter, Beatrix","id":"A18000"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"watercolour (paint)","id":"AAT15045"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"},{"text":"watercolour painting (technique)","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour and pencil, and pencil, on paper","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"},{"text":"Watercolours","id":"THES277714"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"}],"styles":[{"text":"British","id":"AAT111159"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2020ML1275","2020ML1263","2017KB3452","2017KB3454"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"SK Temp 9b","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],[{"text":"watercolour (painting)","id":"AAT78925"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"early 20th century","earliest":"1900-01-01","latest":"1950-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Linder Bequest [plus object number; written on labels on the same line as the object number]","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"175","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"255","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Acquired by the V&A from Leslie Linder (1904-1973) in 1973 as part of the Linder Bequest, a collection of ca. 2150 watercolours, drawings, literary manuscripts, correspondence, books, photographs, and other memorabilia associated with Beatrix Potter and her family.
