At Goldsmith’s College he taught some of the foremost British etchers of the 1920s, including Graham Sutherland, Paul Drury and Robin Tanner. He is now best known for his series of engravings featuring traditional crafts, trades and farming practices, which were vanishing even then in the 1930s and 40s. These subjects perhaps appealed particularly to Anderson because he did not like to refer to himself as an artist, but instead aligned himself with the workers and craftsmen who, from the early 1930s onwards, were his primary subjects. He felt that the artist’s ‘job’ was not to indulge in self-expression but to do justice to his subject through a mastery of medium and technique. These highly detailed closely observed prints are a fascinating record of life and work in mid-20th century rural Britain. They reflect the artist’s scepticism about the value of progress, and his fears about man’s estrangement from nature, as well as the loss of respect for physical labour and craft skills.","physicalDescription":"Black and white print showing a seated man weaving a basket.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Anderson, Stanley RA","id":"A1998"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Colnaghi","id":"A24954"},"association":{"text":"publishers","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraving","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2018KN6355"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"EE","shelf":"1","box":"D"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"UK","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1942","earliest":"1942-01-01","latest":"1942-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the support of the V&A Members Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"29.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"21.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"17.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"plate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"16.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"plate","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Ed:50 Stanley Anderson\r\nThe Basket-maker (Line-Engaving)\r\nEdition 50 prints","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"All in pencil"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Stanley Anderson (1884-1966): The Basketmaker, 1942, engraving.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"From an edition of 50","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.737-2017"],"accessionNumberNum":"737","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2017,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-07-23","recordCreationDate":"2017-07-18","availableToBook":false}}
