On this chalice, the Latin inscription around the bowl emphasizes this function. This silver chalice was made in the early 13th century, a time when Iceland had cultural, trade and diplomatic links with northern Europe, especially with Norway and England. In this period Icelandic culture flourished, notably through the work of writers like Snorri Sturluson (1178-1241), the great scholar, poet and historian. The decoration and style of this chalice, particularly the foliate decoration of the knop, reflects a knowledge of Romanesque sculptural forms.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gilded silver","categories":[{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Christianity","id":"THES48978"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2007BL9837","2017KE2538"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"10","id":"THES49099"},"free":"","case":"13","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES407969"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Chalice","id":""}],[{"text":"Paten","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Iceland","id":"x30043"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"},{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"},{"place":{"text":"Norway","id":"x29052"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1200","earliest":"1195-01-01","latest":"1204-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased together for £70 from S.
