This brooch, created from an old damascened iron gun barrel, is representative of a long trajectory within Appleby’s career and is a superb example of the painterly effects and the wide tonal range he creates from his exploration of different metals. ","physicalDescription":"An oval, slightly undulating sheet of metal, engraved with a pattern of spiralling lines which emanate from two points lower left and upper right. Where the outer edges of the spirals meet are four small spheres, and there are three further spheres on the left spiral. The surface has an irregular covering of gold in different shades and the dark iron shows through in parts. The back reveals the veining of the damascened gun barrel from which it was made. This has been blued by heating and has further coloured gold decoration.
