As Adzido’s book, Traditional Dances of Sub-Saharan Africa (2003) explains, ‘Some of the movements, such as the presentation of arms, wrestling and boxing, wooden horse leaps and bayonet charges are all motifs from the arms drill of the French Colonial soldiers.’\n\r\nThis costume appeared in Adzido's 1999-2001 production, Sankofa, where the Adzogbo was used to finish the show.\n\nThe skirt is made of printed cotton textiles known as Ankara, African-print cloth or Dutch wax, which have been fashionable in West and East Africa since the late 19th century. Ankara as a textile is historically rooted in colonial global trade, as Europeans replicated Indonesian batik and began to export wax fabrics across Africa. Production began to shift to Africa in the 20th century, and Ankara has been used over the years as a signifier of the continent. \r\n \r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"},{"text":"Raffia","id":"AAT14051"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Ankara print cotton, with dyed straw and cord leg pieces","categories":[{"text":"Africa","id":"THES49019"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Dance","id":"THES252984"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2021NA8560","2021NA8561","2021NA8567","2017KA5903","2017KA5904","2017KA5905","2017KA5906","2017KA5907","2017KA5908","2017KA5909","2017KA5910","2017KA5914","2017KA5911"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"105","id":"THES49926"},"free":"","case":"CA010","shelf":"FIG","box":""},{"current":{"text":"105","id":"THES49926"},"free":"","case":"CA010","shelf":"FIG","box":""},{"current":{"text":"105","id":"THES49926"},"free":"","case":"CA010","shelf":"FIG","box":""},{"current":{"text":"105","id":"THES49926"},"free":"","case":"CA010","shelf":"FIG","box":""},{"current":{"text":"105","id":"THES49926"},"free":"","case":"CA010","shelf":"FIG","box":""},{"current":{"text":"105","id":"THES49926"},"free":"","case":"CA010","shelf":"FIG","box":""},{"current":{"text":"105","id":"THES49926"},"free":"","case":"CA010","shelf":"FIG","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dance Costume","id":"x34504"}],[{"text":"Dance Costume","id":"x34504"}],[{"text":"Dance Costume","id":"x34504"}],[{"text":"Dance Costume","id":"x34504"}],[{"text":"Dance Costume","id":"x34504"}],[{"text":"Dance Costume","id":"x34504"}],[{"text":"Dance Costume","id":"x34504"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1999","earliest":"1999-01-01","latest":"1999-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Adzido Pan African Dance Ensemble","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Collection given by Adzido Pan African Dance Ensemble.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Seven-part costume for a dancer of the Adzogbo in Sankofa, presented by Adzido Pan African Ensemble, 1999-2001","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Gallery rotation, 2022\n\nCOSTUME WORN BY A DANCER FROM ADZIDO PAN AFRICAN DANCE ENSEMBLE\r\n1999\n\r\nMade with colourful West African ‘Ankara’ print fabric, this costume was worn for the Adzogbo, a dance from Benin.
