The ballet was staged by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes at the Alhambra Theatre, Leicester Square, London, on 2 November 1921 and ran until 4 February 1922. It was based on the choreography of Marius Petipa's 1890 production which was reproduced by Serguyev to music by Piotr Tchaikovsky. New additions were made to the ballet choreographed by Bronislava Nijinska and the whole production was designed by Leon Bakst.\n\nScene 1, The Christening, is described in the programme. 'Just as everybody was rejoicing a page burst upon the scene with the dread tidings that the wicked fairy, Carabosse, was approaching in dire anger at not having been invited to the christening. Presently she arrived in a chariot drawn by four rats and demanded to be shown the royal infant. Not daring to disobey, the king ordered the royal nurses to bring her forward, whereupon the wicked fairy, in a terrible voice said, 'I promise that one day you shall pierce your hand with a spindle, and on that day you shall surely die'.\nThe photograph shows Carabosse (Carlotta Brianza) with her rats and retainers having cast her spell. Behind her is Catallabutte (having lost his wig and hair) and, stage left, the Queen (Vera Sudekina) faints to lean on the King (Leonard Trier). The fairies huddle upstage left. Also in the photograph are the Royal Physician, Maids of Honour, Ladies in Waiting, Lords and Pages.
