The Venus and Mars sculpture was made by Antonio Canova in 1815-1819, and is now part of the Royal Collection, on display at Buckingham Palace (RCIN 2038). This daguerreotype is a separate plate with the edges hammered down to make the image slightly raised. It has a thin cardboard border and a sheet of glass. These are all loose elements, though they are stored together. The original casing seems to have been lost.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Canova, Antonio","id":"A8217"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"AAT25181"},"note":"Sculptor of the statue that is the subject of this photograph."}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"copper","id":"AAT11020"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"daguerreotype","id":"AAT53530"},{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Daguerreotype and glazing","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"The Royal Photographic Society","id":"THES281081"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"DOP","id":"THES291628"},"images":["2017KA8961","2017KA8960"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"MB1","shelf":"DR19","box":"XRG1039"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}],[{"text":"daguerreotype","id":"AAT127181"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":"The sculpture was commissioned by George IV in 1815 and delivered to Carlton House in 1824."}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"mid 19th century","earliest":"1825-01-01","latest":"1875-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"PROV.6596-2017","id":"O1384155"},"association":"RPS Group record"}],"creditLine":"The Royal Photographic Society Collection at the V&A, acquired with the generous assistance of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Art Fund.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"80","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Plate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"68","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Plate","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Green sticker with '109' stuck on the verso of the plate."},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On the recto of the daguerreotype plate, a serial number is stamped in the bottom right corner."}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph by an unknown photographer, Statue of Mars and Venus by Antonio Canova (one of a group of 4 photographs), daguerreotype, mid-19th century.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["RPS.500-2017"],"accessionNumberNum":"500","accessionNumberPrefix":"RPS","accessionYear":2017,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"RPS collection - V&A identifier","id":"THES275176"},"number":"XRG1039"},{"type":{"text":"Science Museum Group accession number","id":"THES275235"},"number":"2003-5001/2/28203"},{"type":{"text":"RPS identifier - misc.","id":"THES275193"},"number":"Cat no. 00D109"},{"type":{"text":"RPS identifier - misc.","id":"THES275193"},"number":"C7/D4"},{"type":{"text":"RPS identifier - inventory no.","id":"THES275184"},"number":"13034"},{"type":{"text":"Royal Photographic Society number","id":"THES275233"},"number":"119d"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-02-27","recordCreationDate":"2017-06-20","availableToBook":false}}
