Filigree is one of the most characteristic elements, but jewellery made from sheet silver also uses the same swirling scrolls and flowers, as on this ring.\r\n\r\nIn the south German region a finger ring could act as an amulet or seal, or carry the image of the wearer’s patron saint, as well as show their marital status.  This ring was probably an engagement or wedding gift, as there are two hearts entwined among the flowers which run continuously round the band.  It is made of silver-plated copper, which was common for traditional jewellery in the area in the 19th century.","physicalDescription":"Gilt metal band ring decorated with a continuous pattern of intertwined flowers and leaves, with two hearts at the front.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gilt","id":"x35080"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gilt metal","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"},{"text":"Traditional jewellery (Europe)","id":"THES270343"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006BJ5078","2006BJ5079"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91M (VA)","id":"THES49137"},"free":"","case":"72","shelf":"B","box":"10"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Ring","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Austria","id":"x28728"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Grödener","id":"x42976"},"association":{"text":"worn","id":"x34724"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Eisack","id":"x42977"},"association":{"text":"worn","id":"x34724"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1800-1870","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1870-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"1.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"2.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Gilt metal band ring with floral pattern, Austria, 19th century.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"hearts","id":"AAT9874"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["941-1872"],"accessionNumberNum":"941","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1872,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2017KJ5300","2019LN4768","2019LT2346","2019LW7609"],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-07","recordCreationDate":"2007-10-05","availableToBook":false}}
