By the first half of the 19th century it was the main centre of production for small silver items in the region.  The silversmiths specialised in popular and devotional jewellery.  They sold their work at markets throughout the Alpine region, and at major international trade fairs all over Europe.  \r\n\r\nThis ring would have been worn by a woman.  The picture of a flower may mean that it was given to her as a love token.  The reverse painting technique is typical of south Germany, as is the diagonal banding on the shank.  It is marked on the outside of the shank with the unicorn’s head mark of Schwäbisch Gmünd, and the silver mark 12.","physicalDescription":"Silver ring with flat band shank decorated with diagonal bars.  The bezel is a square piece of glass with rounded corners decorated with a flower reverse-painted over red foil, and surrounded by a border of filigree coil rings.  The shoulders are each decorated with an applied silver flower, matching that on the bezel, with a red paste in the centre.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"},{"text":"paste","id":"AAT10803"}],"techniques":[{"text":"filigree","id":"x35885"},{"text":"reverse","id":"AAT53366"},{"text":"verre","id":"AAT53833"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver filigree with reverse-painted glass over red foil, and red pastes","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"},{"text":"Traditional jewellery (Europe)","id":"THES270343"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006BJ5038","2006BJ5039"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91M (VA)","id":"THES49137"},"free":"","case":"72","shelf":"A","box":"7"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Ring","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Schwäbisch Gmünd","id":"x38370"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1800-1840","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1840-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"2.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"1.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'12' in square frame.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Mark for 750 standard silver, Germany, before 1888.","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On outside centre back of shank."},{"content":"Unicorn’s head in square frame.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Town mark for Schwäbisch Gmünd, before 1888.","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On outside centre back of shank."}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Silver ring with design of a rose reverse-painted on glass, Schwäbisch Gmünd (South Germany), 1800-1840.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"rose","id":"x40377"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["911-1872"],"accessionNumberNum":"911","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1872,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2017KF4435","2019LP7516","2019LT2050","2019LU0703"],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-07","recordCreationDate":"2007-10-05","availableToBook":false}}
