Engraved metal plates and rollers enabled printers to achieve pictorial detail and clarity. Such single colour prints were relatively affordable, and were used for soft furnishings.\r\n\r\nThis sample of printed cotton depicts the first seven American presidents: George Washington (term of office 1789-1797), John Adams (1797-1801), Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809), James Madison (1809-1817), James Monroe (1817-1825), John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), and Andrew Jackson (1829-1837). Andrew Jackson’s portrait is encircled with the words ‘Magnanimous in Peace/ Victorious in war/President of the United States of America from March 4th 1829 to - / Supreme Commander of the Army and Navy’, and flanked either side by an American eagle, and the frigate USS Constitution (known as ‘Old Ironsides’).  It celebrates Jackson’s connection with the War of 1812, when the US declared war on the British Empire. A truce was declared in 1814, but the war was perceived as a victory by the US. As a General, Andrew Jackson led the troops to a perceived ‘victory’ in New Orleans. He was the subject of renewed interest in 2017 as President Trump has associated his own presidency with that of this predecessor, hanging a portrait of Jackson in the Oval Office at the White House.\r\n\r\nThe design was probably adapted from a French toile (now in the Smithsonian) to which was added the images of Andrew Jackson and the Constitution. The source for this toile was itself a print published in Paris by Chaillou Portrelle showing the first six presidents in clouds above an American eagle, drawn by Antoine Maurin, lithographed by Langlumé, following portraits by Gilbert Stuart.  The portrait of Jackson c.1815 is after Nathan Wheeler. \r\n\r\nThis design, printed in green, is used for a wholecloth coverlet in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum (10.125.413).
