The complete outfit consisted of a baseball hat and this shirt by Cross Colours and a denim jacket, jeans, jersey shorts and boots by Karl Kani. It reflected a style of ‘B-Boy’ dress worn by some young African American and black British men in the early 1990s.\r\n\r\n‘B-Boy’ was the name given to young, urban African Americans associated with the rap and hip-hop scene. Cross Colours and Karl Kani were two clothing brands associated with the subculture. Cross Colours was a hip-hop clothing brand created in 1990 in Los Angeles and marketed towards urban African American youth. Its products peaked in popularity between autumn 1992 and spring 1993. Designer Karl Kani made his name as a pioneer of baggy designer jeans and colourful shirts for black male youth in the early 1990s. He founded his own company, Karl Kani Infinity, in 1994.","physicalDescription":"Cotton plaid shirt, in a patchwork style, with two sorts of checks.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Cross Colours","id":"A19982"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cotton","categories":[{"text":"African Diaspora","id":"THES48873"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"},{"text":"Sport","id":"THES48893"},{"text":"Informal wear","id":"THES48935"},{"text":"Streetstyle exhibition 1994","id":"THES282706"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2018LC1109","2006AT2841","2018LC0854"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES312153"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Shirt","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1994","earliest":"1994-01-01","latest":"1994-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"89","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Back, collar to hem edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"53","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Sleeve seam and cuff","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"62","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Sleeve, shoulder to cuff","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"133","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Chest","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"133","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Hem ","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"0.76","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Weight includes hanger and tyvek bag.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1994/452, Streetstyle exhibition 1994-1995, in the exhibition it was part of a 1993 B-Boy outfit that includes the jacket T.232-1994, the jeans T.233-1994, the shorts T.234-1994, the t-shirt T.233-1993, the baseball hat T.239-1994 and the boots T.631-1994).","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Shirt, cotton plaid, Cross Colours, United States, 1994","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Surfers, Soulies, Skinheads & Skaters : Subcultural Style from the Forties to the Nineties","id":"AUTH352425"},"details":"","free":"Not described in the exhibition publication."}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Two very successful black Afro-American companies have, in the last few years, become popular amongst the B-Boy fraternity.
