At the age of 19, he went to Nanjing, the provincial capital to study painting under Prof. Chen Zhifo (1896-1962). After the Cultural Revolution, his works steadily gained appreciation from a wide range of people (e.g. students, artists, government officials and collectors). Today he is regarded by many in China as one of the most important living artists practising the gongbi style of birds-and-flowers painting. \n\r\nThe scroll depicts a pair of pigeons standing under a plum blossom tree on a spring day, with bees buzzing in the sprays of flowers. The work has the hallmark of the artist’s style - elegant, lyrical and decorative. No doubt the work follows the long tradition of the gongbi bird-flower painting, but its subject matter betrays the fact that it was also modern. Growing up in the early and optimistic decade of the Chinese communist era, like the majority of the Chinese people, the artist believed in the egalitarian ideal. In the painting, consciously or unconsciously, the artist breaks down the traditional divide between the courtly and literati bird-and-flower painting. Here, the literati’s bamboo and plum blossom are intermingled with the courtly pigeons and camellia.\r\n\r\nThis is the second version of this composition by the artist, the primary version was made in 2005. This version was made by Ju Jigao in 2016 as a gift for the V&A.\r\n","briefDescription":"Scroll painting, Peaceful Spring/Spring Bursts Out of Peace, by Yu Jigao, 2016","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"A pair of pigeons standing under a plum blossom tree on a spring day, with bees buzzing amongst sprays of white flowers.","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.70-2017"],"accessionNumberNum":"70","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":2017,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2017-06-12","availableToBook":true}}
