The artist Phyllis Ginger (1907-2005) is best known for her topographical watercolour landscapes for the 'Recording Britain' project, which begun in 1939 with the purpose of recording aspects of British landscape that might be destroyed and lost under enemy bombing. It was Ginger's skill as a topographical artist that led to her first commission as an artist, a watercolour of Chelsea Bridge, which was presented as a gift to the Canadian Prime Minister when he officially opened it in 1937, and Ginger was also given permission to sketch the bombed streets of London during the war.","physicalDescription":"Sketch of the George Inn, Southwark, by Phyllis Ginger","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Ginger, Phyllis E.","id":"A2170"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"wash","id":"AAT11051"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil and wash","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2009BY6425","2023NP6093"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH (VA)","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"WD","shelf":"65","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":"AAT15617"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1940-1960","earliest":"1935-01-01","latest":"1960-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Paul Durbin and Eleanor Durbin","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"21.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"27.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sketch of the George Inn, Southwark, by Phyllis Ginger","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"southwark","id":"x29479"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.321-2007"],"accessionNumberNum":"321","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2007,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2007-09-27","availableToBook":false}}
