Owen Jones believed that good design could only come from the study of ancient patterns and published books on the Alhambra in Spain (1842) and the ‘Grammar of Ornament’ (1856), which celebrates designs taken from the architecture of different civilizations. ‘Peri’, the title of this silk design confirms its inspiration from Persian or Iranian decorative art and mythology. In 1860 a lavishly decorated volume of ‘Paradise and the Peri’ from Thomas Moore’s Lalla Rookh, an Oriental Romance was published with chromolithographs by Owen Jones.","physicalDescription":"Furnishing fabric of brocaded silk satin.
