They depict famous public figures in history, politics and the arts from Britain, the Continent and America, who were well-known at the time. Sometimes, however, these names are now unfamiliar or not known at all.\r\nJosiah Wedgwood (1730-1795) was born into a family of potters in what is now known as Stoke-on-Trent. He founded his company in 1759. This piece commemorates the 225th anniversary of the company in 1984. Josiah Wedgwood is shown in profile, the portrait was originally modelled by the modeller William Hackwood in 1782. Wedgwood is shown with his famous work, the Portland Vase, as an identifying attribute in the tradition of some of Wedgwood's 18th century portrait medallions.","physicalDescription":"Teal coloured jasper medallion with integral lilac jasper frame with black ornaments and white reliefs in the centre.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hackwood, William","id":"A8461"},"association":{"text":"modelled","id":"x28693"},"note":"William Hackwood originally modelled this relief in 1782."}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"Manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Jasperware","id":"x30174"}],"techniques":[{"text":"sprigged","id":"x44239"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Jasperware with applied relief","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"},{"text":"Jasperware","id":"THES48931"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2024NV4023"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES381413"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"portrait medallions","id":"THES276079"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Barlaston","id":"x31989"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1984","earliest":"1984-01-01","latest":"1984-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
