In this humorous composite print Rejlander combines two photographs of himself. Dressed as an artist Rejlander is painting himself, dressed as a volunteer soldier. A trained artist, Rejlander learnt photography as an aid to painting, latter developing a technique of combining negatives to produce a single print. He was also a volunteer soldier, joining the 1st Wolverhampton Volunteer Company in 1860. An excellent shot, he won prizes for his marksmanship.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rejlander, Oscar Gustav","id":"A12242"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"photographic paper","id":"AAT14190"}],"techniques":[{"text":"albumen process","id":"AAT133274"},{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Albumen print in a card mount.","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"The Royal Photographic Society","id":"THES281081"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"DOP","id":"THES291628"},"images":["2017KA5285","2017KA5286"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"XRP","shelf":"1505","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}],[{"text":"albumen print","id":"AAT127121"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c. 1871","earliest":"1866-01-01","latest":"1875-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"PROV.2513-2017","id":"O1382401"},"association":"RPS Group record"}],"creditLine":"The Royal Photographic Society Collection at the V&A, acquired with the generous assistance of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Art Fund.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"181","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Image","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"140","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Image","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph by Oscar Gustav Rejlander, 'Rejlander Introduces Rejlander the Volunteer', albumen print, c. 1871","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Making It Up: Photographic Fictions (2018)\r\nMarta Weiss\r\n\r\nRejlander enacted numerous roles in front of his own camera.
