From his earliest works, which examine subjects as apparently diverse as farm machinery and the writings of James Joyce, Hamilton is widely recognised for his exploration of the relationship between contemporary life, commerce and technology and he was one of the first to explore the potential of the computer in art. This title sheet is for a suite of screenprints, which began with a drawing copied, in 1963, from an illustration of the development of tyre treads from 1902 -1950, in a 1951 edition of the magazine 'Technique et Architecture'. The suite demonstrates his interest in design technology. He was also interested in exploring deeper, philosophical issues relating to ideas of the early 20th century Dada artist Marcel Duchamp in the use of tautology and of complication through repetition. He developed the drawing first as a single screenprint in 1964 and again in 1970 when he was offered the services of an American computer programmer to plot the perspective of the drawings. A 3-d relief cast (Circ.11a-1973) was produced as part of the suite and this textual documentation is also an integral part of the work.","physicalDescription":"Lithograph","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hamilton, Richard","id":"A2916"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Frielinghaus, Hartmut","id":"A20136"},"association":{"text":"cast-maker","id":"x41023"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Professional Prints","id":"A20122"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Eye Editions","id":"A20123"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Petersburg Press","id":"A20137"},"association":{"text":"distributors","id":"x41024"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lithographic ink","id":"AAT187750"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT53271"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour offset lithograph on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"DR","shelf":"169","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Hamburg","id":"x28900"},"association":{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Switzerland","id":"x29199"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1963-1970","earliest":"1963-01-01","latest":"1970-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1972","earliest":"1972-01-01","latest":"1972-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"CIRC.5-1973","id":"O139261"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.6-1973","id":"O139264"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.7-1973","id":"O139266"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.8-1973","id":"O139267"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.9-1973","id":"O139271"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.10-1973","id":"O139272"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.11-1973","id":"O139273"},"association":""},{"object":{"text":"CIRC.11A-1973","id":"O139439"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Acquired from Nigel Greenwood Inc., London in 1973","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"60","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"85","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The suite Circ.5-11B-1973 was originally housed in a paper-lined portfolio box lined with white paper and with an inner paper and foam support on which 68/150 is written in pencil.
