He had attended drawing classes at Chelsea Polytechnic and used his new skills to record landscapes in Egypt, Lebanon, Syria and Iran. He knew of the work of the artists David Roberts and Edward Lear and this landscape sketch was probably inspired by their drawings. In later life he formed the Searight Collection of images of the Middle East, now part of the collections of the V&A.
