They depict famous public figures in history, politics and the arts from Britain, the Continent and America, who were well-known at the time. Sometimes, however, these names are now unfamiliar or not known at all.\r\nMaria I of Portugal, also often referred to as Maria the Pious, was born in 1734 as the eldest daughter of King José/Joseph I of Portugal whom she succeeded in 1777. She and her court moved to the Portuguese colony of Brazil in 1807 and she became its first Monarch after Brazil was elevated to a kingdom in 1815. She is depicted here wearing the Order of Christ.\n\nThis portrait was modelled by John Flaxman jr. in 1787 and was in production at the Wedgwood factory before the end of the year.","physicalDescription":"Sage green jasperware portrait medallion with white reliefs","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Flaxman, John","id":"A1284"},"association":{"text":"modeller","id":"AAT25417"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"Manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Jasperware","id":"x30174"}],"techniques":[{"text":"sprigged","id":"x44239"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Jasperware with applied reliefs","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Jasperware","id":"THES48931"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2024NW3591","2024NW3592"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES381378"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"portrait medallions","id":"THES276079"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Barlaston","id":"x31989"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1974","earliest":"1974-01-01","latest":"1974-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
