It was first performed by the Ballets Russes on 6 January 1924 at Théâtre de Monte Carlo and first seen in London on 25 May 1925 at the Coliseum Theatre. The Morning Post described how in the 'Chanson Dansee' the three young men, often referred to as athletes because of their costumes, 'display their physical beauty'. \r\n\nLifar's costume is a machine-knitted silk jersey one-piece (fastened at the shoulder) to suggest shorts and a singlet with a belt at the waist. He has sky-blue trunks and silver-grey vest stencilled with three sky-blue stripes worn with a white sash across his chest and white socks.\n\nSerge Lifar (1905-1986) was born in Kyiv and trained there with Bronislava Nijinska. He joined Diaghilev's Ballets Russes with other former pupils of Nijinska in 1923 where his stage presence attracted Diaghilev who had him was coached by Enrico Cecchetti to assume starring roles in 1925. He would become the ballet director of the Paris Opera and a significant choreographer.\n\nArthur King who gave a number of photographs of the Ballets Russes to Gabrielle Enthoven had a long involvement with Diaghilev's company and served as a publicist for the company in Britain.","physicalDescription":"Full-length studio photograph of Serge Lifar in costume Les Biches, performed by Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.
