She learnt the craft of dressmaking at the Central School of Arts in London and spent her early career designing for a number of wholesale clothing manufacturers. Following the outbreak of the Second World War, Ironside went to work in a factory making hydraulic brakes. In 1948 she was hired as assistant to Madge Garland (Lady Ashton), Professor of Fashion Design at the Royal College of Art. Having built up her knowledge of and contacts within the fashion industry, she left the RCA in 1950 to set up her eponymous dressmaking business. Based at her home in Kensington, clients of the business included Princess de Chimay, Lady Westmoreland, Lady Rupert Neville, Muriel Forbes and Iris Ashley. During this time Ironside also designed children’s clothing.\n\r\nIn 1956 it was reported that Madge Garland was retiring from her role as Professor of Fashion Design at the RCA and Janey Ironside was subsequently appointed to the position. Until resigning in 1968, she oversaw the formative studies of several significant designers of the 1960s and 70s such as Ossie Clark, Bill Gibb, Zandra Rhodes, and Sally Foale & Marion Tuffin.\n\r\nThis dress follows the conventional silhouette of the period with a nipped-in waist and emphasis on the bust and hips. A double-layer effect is created with extra panels over the a-line skirt, which are gathered at the waist and pleated over the bust to create a pie-crust frilled edge. ","physicalDescription":"Strapless long evening gown, the bodice mounted on an interior boned and structured corselette.
