It was re-named in 1819 after the complex of West London streets and houses built by brothers Robert and James Adam from 1768. The word 'Adelphi' from the Greek 'Adelphoi', means brothers.\n\nIn 1858, the theatre had been demolished and re-built with an expanded capacity of 1,500 seats, christened as 'the New Adelphi'.
