The designer, Johann Hrdlicka, was a professor at the Central Lace School in Vienna, and his work had been a highlight of the Austrian Arts and Crafts section of the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. It was reported that 'Museums competed with beautiful women to acquire the delicate airy lace'. \r\n\r\nAlthough the execution of this lace is not fine enough to suggest that it was actually made in the Central Lace School, it seems very likely to have been made at the time, following or inspired by one of Hrdlicka’s designs.","physicalDescription":"Fine linen centre, decorated with broad edging of lace constructed from bobbin-made tapes, with needle fillings. The lace is well made but its attachment to the linen centre is fairly crude.\r\nVery irregular outline, with design reminiscent of starfish.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen","id":"x29412"}],"techniques":[{"text":"bobbin lace","id":"x30355"},{"text":"needle lace","id":"x29416"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen with tape lace","categories":[{"text":"Lace","id":"THES48926"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2018KX6977"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"015","id":"THES310975"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Handkerchief","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Austria","id":"x28728"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1903","earliest":"1902-01-01","latest":"1904-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Jane Ehrlich","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"320","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"20/07/2018","earliest":"2018-07-20","latest":"2018-07-20"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"310","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"20/07/2018","earliest":"2018-07-20","latest":"2018-07-20"},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Handkerchief, tape lace border, c.1902-4, Austrian probably","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.57-2007"],"accessionNumberNum":"57","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2007,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-17","recordCreationDate":"2007-08-30","availableToBook":true}}
