The American production was choreographed by Adolf Bolm but Diaghilev had the option of the European premiere when it was choreographed by George Balanchine. As Apollo it has proved a long-lasting popular ballet and been redesigned on many occasions and is usually performed on an undecorated stage or one with a staircase symbolically representing the mountain at the back.
