Beck was an unemployed engineer when he first devised the map. His design was inspired by electrical circuit diagrams and uses only vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines. In designing this map, Beck ignored geographical accuracy and chose instead to emphasize the connections and interchanges between the different lines and stations. This resulted in a map which is misleading about the distances between individual stations, but is very clear and easy to use for those undertaking a journey on the system. The map was so successful that it has remained unchanged (apart from the addition of new lines and stations) since it was first devised in 1933. The original sketch for the map is also in the collection (E.814-1979).","physicalDescription":"A small poster map showing the London Underground Railway network in diagrammatic form.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beck, Harry","id":"A20033"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"London Passenger Transport Board","id":"A38557"},"association":{"text":"issued by","id":"x36339"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Waterlow & Sons","id":"A9248"},"association":{"text":"printer","id":"x30811"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Transport","id":"THES48881"},{"text":"Maps","id":"THES252964"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"74","id":"THES49720"},"free":"","case":"CA005","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"printed and published","id":"x35383"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1933","earliest":"1933-01-01","latest":"1933-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed and published","id":"x35383"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Ken Garland Esq.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"246","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"209","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Thickness","value":"10","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"closed","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Lithograph, 2nd edition print of Henry Beck's London Underground Map; produced for the LPTB, 1933","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"London","id":"x28980"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"map","id":"AAT28094"},{"text":"railway","id":"AAT8591"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Henry Beck's London Underground map is the most famous transport map in the world, and an icon of twentieth-century London.
