To accessorise the dolls she also collected miniature furniture and household utensils.\r\n\r\nIn 1761 Laetitia married David Powell, a London merchant, at St Botolph's, Bishopgate, London. The couple continued to live in that area, and one of their sons was the grandfather of the founder of the Boy Scouts, General Sir Robert Baden-Powell. Further dolls - dressed by the granddaughters and great-granddaughters of Laetita Powell - were added to the collection up to 1911. This doll was dressed in 1841 in a fashionable walking dress of the period.\r\n\r\nThe collection both illustrates the styles of dress of the period, the fabrics available, and the types of dolls that were available.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Doll, German, dressed in England in fashionable walking ensemble of 1842","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Serena Dyer, 'Fashions in Miniature: Dolls', Material Lives: Women Makers and Consumer Culture in the 18th Century, 2021, chapter 5, 161-187."}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Unique","id":"THES48864"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["W.183:15-1919","W.183:15/1-1919","W.183:15/2-1919","W.183:15/3-1919","W.183:15/4-1919"],"accessionNumberNum":"183","accessionNumberPrefix":"W","accessionYear":1919,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Doll","Mantle","Dress","Bonnet","Neckerchief"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-02-17","recordCreationDate":"2007-08-17","availableToBook":true}}
