Apollon Musagète was first performed at the theatre Sarah Bernhardt, Paris on 12 June 1928 with a score and book by Igor Stravinsky and choreography by George Balanchine.\r\n\r\nThis is one of a series of photographs taken at Lipnitzki’s studio in Paris in 1928 to publicise Apollon Musagéte with Lifar (Apollo) and just two of the muses. The photos evoke poses from the ballet, in this instance from the start of the final section (2.ix) and show the original costumes derived from paintings by André Bauchant. The muses wear tutus with asymmetrical hems which were only worn in 1928 and redesigned as jersey tunics by Chanel the following year. Apollo is in his short red tunic.\r\n\r\nUsually simply called Apollo this was one of Balanchine’s most successful ballets and continues to be performed having been redesigned on numerous occasions.
