This print is one of several inspired by opera. (In 2015 Hammick completed a year-long residency at English National Opera, and has designed for Glyndbourne). Violetta and Alfredo’s Escape is Hammick’s interpretation of a scene from Verdi’s opera La Traviata (which is itself based on Dumas’ novel La Dame aux Camellias). Hammick conjures a scene which combines familiar elements from other examples of his work – the traditional box-like house with its lighted windows (an emblem of shelter and security), the moon, and a tree from his garden, but he also introduces features and stylistic devices borrowed from Japanese art, and in particular the prints of Hiroshige, including the handling of perspective and distance, and the juxtaposition of areas of flat pattern with blocks of colour. The print is a colour reduction woodcut. Rather than printing each colour from a separate block, the artist works with a single block, cutting it away in stages and printing each colour on every sheet in the edition, before cleaning and cutting the block again, to print the next colour.","physicalDescription":"Portrait format print showing a landscape at night with trees, some in blossom, a house with lighted windows, and a moon.
