The complete outfit consisted of a black and grey cotton NATO camouflage jacket and trousers; the baseball hat, a Public Enemy cotton t-shirt; a leather holster; a metal belt buckle and leather army boots by Four Star General. It reflected a ‘B-Boy’ style of dress worn by young British men around 1988.\r\n\r\nIn the late 1980s the black militant look was epitomised by the band <i>Public Enemy</i>. On their first LP, ‘Yo! Bum rush the show’, released in 1987, they were dressed in army camouflage, black berets and held Uzi machine guns. This look became popular as an expression of black consciousness. Every conceivable garment was emblazoned with the silhouette and cross-wire logo of <i>Public Enemy</i>, including this baseball hat.","physicalDescription":"Black cotton and plastic baseball hat with Public Enemy design.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Four Star General","id":"A22107"},"association":{"text":"retailer","id":"AAT25246"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"},{"text":"plastic","id":"AAT14570"}],"techniques":[{"text":"machine sewing","id":"AAT257463"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Cotton and plastic","categories":[{"text":"African Diaspora","id":"THES48873"},{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"},{"text":"Hats and headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"},{"text":"Streetstyle exhibition 1994","id":"THES282706"},{"text":"Caribbean","id":"THES286921"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2007BM6775","2006AT2843","2019LJ1009","2019LJ1010","2019LJ7406","2019LJ7407"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES343864"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"baseball caps","id":"AAT220841"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1988","earliest":"1988-01-01","latest":"1988-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"25.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"19.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"11","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'PUBLIC ENEMY / © 1991 DEF JAM RECORDINGS'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On front of baseball hat"}],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1994/1708, Streetstyle exhibition 1994-1995, in the exhibition it was part of an outfit called 'Military-PE B-Boy UK 1988' (includes the belt buckle T.298-1993, the holster T.741-1994, the camouflage suit: jacket T.1023-1994 and trousers T.1024-1994, the T-shirt T.1025-1994 and the boots T.1027-1994).","historicalContext":"'Black and grey cotton NATO Arctic camouflage jacket and trousers; baseball hat, cotton t-shirt, Public Enemy; leather holster; metal belt buckle, leather army boots, Four Star General.\r\nIn the late 1980s the black militant look was epitomised by the band Public Enemy.
