The complete outfit consisted of a black-and-white checked Krimatex woollen coat; a scrim and velvet hat; the bag and a salmon pink cotton mix two-piece suit by Nat Gaynes (Guyana). The outfit reflected a style of dress worn by West Indian women in Britain in the early 1950s. \r\n\r\nDr Gilroy travelled from Guyana to England in 1951 to continue her studies in teaching. Her wardrobe consisted of brightly-coloured tailored clothes, which she had made by local dressmakers who copied styles from American fashion magazines. She wore the suit in the Caribbean and bought the hat and coat in London because of the colder climate. She recalled that her clothes were significantly more colourful than standard post-war wear and included items such as peddle-pushers, which had not previously been seen in Britain. Dr Gilroy became London’s first black headteacher in 1968.","physicalDescription":"Beige plastic bag, 'mock-croc' design, with metal mount.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"plastic","id":"AAT14570"},{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Plastic and metal","categories":[{"text":"African Diaspora","id":"THES48873"},{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Streetstyle exhibition 1994","id":"THES282706"},{"text":"Caribbean","id":"THES286921"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2019LK2823","2006AT5474"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES307068"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bag","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"early 1950s","earliest":"1950-01-01","latest":"1955-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dr Beryl Gilroy","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"21","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Excluding handle"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"28.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"5.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Registered File number 1994/1209, Streetstyle exhibition 1994-1995, in the exhibition it was part of an outfit called 'Caribbean Style UK Early 1950s' (includes the hat T.132-1995, the coat T.133-1995, and the skirt suit: jacket T.134-1995 and skirt T.135-1995).\n\nUsed by Dr Beryl Gilroy in Great Britain after she moved here from Guyana in 1951.
