In them, Leonardo da Vinci wrote his notes on a wide variety of subjects: perspective, light and shade, the human figure, the practice of painting, the artist's materials, the history of the art of painting, studies and sketches for pictures and decorations, sculpture, architecture, anatomy, physiology, maxims, morals, fables, jests and tales, prophecies, draughts and schemes for his humorous writings, etc. ","physicalDescription":"This notebook is volume I in a set of three written by Leonardo da Vinci between 1487 and 1505. This ensemble comprises in fact five of his notebooks bound into three volumes. They contain texts, diagrams and drawings and are written in Italian, in mirror script. \r\nVolume I contains two of these notebooks and is made up of 55 folios. They were bound together before 1608/14 and are designated as Codex Forster I1 (ff. 1-40v; begun in July 1505, Florence) and Codex Forster I2 (ff. 41r-55; compiled c.1487-1490, Milan). \n\r\nThe two other volumes are MSL/1876/Forster/141/II and MSL/1876/Forster/141/III.\n\nThe bindings on all three volumes (Codex Forster I-III) are, according to Nicholas Pickwoad, the result of two campaigns: the notebooks were probably sewn in their current structures with full cartonnage covers in Italy in the late 16th century, while their parchment bindings are considered to have been made in Spain in the early 17th century (see Watson 2011, p. 633).","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"da Vinci, Leonardo","id":"A12588"},"association":{"text":"author","id":"AAT25492"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"parchment","id":"AAT11851"}],"techniques":[{"text":"writing","id":"AAT54698"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"paper, parchment binding","categories":[{"text":"National Art Library","id":"THES271541"},{"text":"Manuscripts","id":"THES48922"},{"text":"Science","id":"THES48898"},{"text":"Medieval and renaissance","id":"THES271264"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"NAL","id":"THES48605"},"images":["2008BU9426","2018KX1169","2018KY1893","2018KY1894","2018KY1895","2018KY1896","2018KY1897","2019MH2789"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"NAL","id":"THES251738"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"manuscript","id":"AAT28569"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Milan","id":"x29007"},"association":{"text":"written","id":"AAT54698"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"hand written","id":"x34827"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c. 1487-c.1505","earliest":"1482-01-01","latest":"1509-12-31"},"association":{"text":"written","id":"AAT54698"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"38041800149478","id":"O1380777"},"association":"Group"},{"object":{"text":"38041800149437","id":"O1380840"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by John Forster.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"140","unit":"mm","qualifier":"binding","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"100","unit":"mm","qualifier":"binding","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Among the manuscripts inherited from Leonardo by Francesco Melzi (1491/3-c.1570) and bequeathed to his son Orazio Melzi.
