The Pussyhat Project initiators encouraged people to knit hats from a simple pattern disseminated online, and either wear it to the march or donate it to others marching. \n\r\nThe project aimed to turn the Women’s March into a ‘sea of pink’, a striking visual statement of solidarity. The hat’s cat ear design is in part a response to the infamous recording of Trump, released during the 2016 US presidential election campaign, in which he claimed to ‘grab [women] by the pussy’, a claim he later put down to ‘locker room banter’. \n\r\nThe project started at the Little Knittery yarn store in LA before gaining global popularity as people shared the pattern and photos of their hats on websites such as Ravelry and Instagram. \r\n\r\nThe pussy hat was acquired as part of Rapid Response Collecting. \r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Zweiman, Jayna","id":"AUTH344923"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Pussy hat project","id":"AUTH344924"},"association":{"text":"designers","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"x40131"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Knitted","id":"x36847"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"The object has been knitted by hand","categories":[{"text":"Feminism","id":"THES48955"},{"text":"Rapid Response Collecting","id":"THES262867"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"DAD","id":"THES260586"},"images":["2018KT6001","2018KT6002"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"014","id":"THES412748"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Hat","id":"AAT46106"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Los Angeles","id":"x29541"},"association":{"text":"Knitted","id":"x36847"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2017","earliest":"2017-01-01","latest":"2017-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Song Oh ","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"240","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Top width"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"220","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Bottom width"},{"dimension":"Height","value":"200","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Knitted 'Pussy Power hat', Jayna Zweiman, 2017","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Unique","id":"THES48864"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"From The Future Starts Here\r\n\r\nPussy Power Hat\r\nPussyhat Project\r\n2017\r\nA KNITTING PATTERN THAT DEFIED A PRESIDENT\r\nIn January 2017, over 500,000 people took part in the Women’s March on Washington to protest the inauguration of US President Donald Trump.
