The results are unique works.\r\n\r\n<i>Whirlpool</i> is one of a series of prints which have been inspired by the architecture of Rome. Desmet was awarded a Rome Scholarship in Printmaking in 1989, which gave her a travel grant to explore Italy. Her use of collage, and her current subject matter derive directly from that experience. There are allusions to Piranesi both in the subject matter, and in her acknowledged debt to her study of his engraving techniques. The work is cleverly constructed with wit and originality, the architectural forms perfectly contained by the shell form. Three different types of paper were used in the collage including transparent Japanese paper. A paper fragment depicting an Italian colonnade deriving from an Italian banknote was also incorporated into the collage to create what Desmet describes as a 'miniature world'.","physicalDescription":"A seashell, possibly an oyster shell, with an wood-engraved image of a circular architectural structure (like a Roman amphitheatre) and a fragment from an Italian banknote collaged on the inner surface.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Desmet, Anne Julie","id":"A15716"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"shell","id":"AAT11829"}],"techniques":[{"text":"collage","id":"AAT138699"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Wood-engraving, Italian banknote and coloured pencil collaged onto seashell","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2008BU2979"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WS (VA)","id":"THES49603"},"free":"","case":"R","shelf":"44","box":"R"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2005","earliest":"2005-01-01","latest":"2005-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased through the Julie and Robert Breckman Print Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"12","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"11","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Desmet found the oyster shell on the beach while on a family holiday in Mumbles Bay, South Wales.
