Skåne province, in the extreme south of Sweden, has the richest tradition, and more jewellery was worn there than in any other district. Almost all the Swedish traditional jewellery at the V&A comes from Skåne. \r\n\r\nA well-dressed woman from Skåne wore multiple pairs of silver clasps along the front edges of her outer clothes. Some of these were functional, and hooked into each other. Others were purely ornamental. \r\n\r\nHeart-shaped clasps like these were originally worn as cloak clasps, but by the 19th century they had moved to the outer jacket, and were often purely decorative. The earliest kind was made of sheet silver with engraved decoration. These continued in use after filigree became popular. This pair is marked with the maker's mark JW. Jonas Wahlberg was a prolific maker of traditional jewellery, who worked in Ystad from 1834 to 1859.","physicalDescription":"Silver clasp, made from two trefoil-shaped parts decorated with engraved leaves, and each set with a central red pear-shaped faceted paste, with two smaller pink, and one green, pastes around it.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Jonas Wahlberg","id":"A19900"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"probably"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"paste (glass)","id":"AAT10803"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraved","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"faceting","id":"AAT236211"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraved silver set with pastes","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"},{"text":"Traditional jewellery (Europe)","id":"THES270343"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006BJ2806","2006BJ2807"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91M (VA)","id":"THES49137"},"free":"","case":"70","shelf":"D","box":"12"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Clasp","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Ystad","id":"x40850"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Herrestad","id":"x42967"},"association":{"text":"worn","id":"x34724"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1850","earliest":"1845-01-01","latest":"1854-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"8.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"0.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'JW'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Mark of Jonas Wahlberg of Ystad, on the back of one part at the point.
