of the inlaid room\r\nMade for Sizergh Castle between about 1575 and the mid-1580s, including plaster ceiling, heraldic glass and inlaid state bed. There is no carved overmantel, and if one had ever been made, it had disappeared by 1805 when a painted landscape and wooden pilasters were fitted above the mid 16c fireplace.\r\n\r\nAcquisition of the room\r\nSir John Hart-Dyke’s authority on RP 7411/1890\r\nPurchased from Walter C. Strickland in 1891 for £1,000 (payment 12/1/1891). A cast of the original ceiling was taken 1890 (6/12/1890 in Strickland nominal file).\r\n\r\nDisplay of the room in the Museum\r\nApparently erected in gallery 52 soon after acquisition but some parts remained in store.\n\nLoan and Transfer\nIn 1958 the NT asked to borrow two inlaid panels from the ensemble of wall panelling (specifically ‘from the window bay of the Inlaid Chamber’) that were not part of the main display, following the Museum’s redisplay of the room. A third panel that did not form part of the gallery 52 display was cleaned and displayed near the room to show the original appearance of the room panelling. (See Nominal file (Strickland) MA/1/53804.)\r\nIn 1973, following discussions begun in 1971, the museum lent two inlaid panels from the ensemble of wall panelling (specifically ‘from the window bay of the Inlaid Chamber’), following their ‘restoration’ by the Museum. This five year loan was renewed in 1978. The room remained on display in gallery 52 until the English primary galleries were closed in 1996 and the panelling deinstalled. The panelling was returned on loan in1999. The agreement between the V&A and the NT NW region stipulates that the loan is for public exhibition for 25 years from 1/11/1998, to be reviewed and renewed every three years. The panelling was transferred to the NT in 2016 (see RF 2014/90)\r\n\r\nObject sampling carried out by Jo Darrah, V&A Science; drawer/slide reference 1/7.\n\n","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Panelled room with internal porch from Sizergh Castle, Cumbria, 1575-1585, the walls with arcading, ionic pilasters and inlay of poplar and bog oak into oak.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Panelled Room - The Sizergh Castle Room.
