Bowls like this were used by the wealthy in the Middle Ages. The lion-head shaped spout on the side allowed water to be poured from one bowl to another, possibly to wash the hands of diners, or perhaps the hands of a priest as part of the ritual of the Mass.It is decorated with enamel, and was made in Limoges, France. It would originally have been brightly gilt, but this has worn away.","physicalDescription":"Bowl, made as one of a pair, champlevé enamel on copper. The exterior with a lion-shaped spout, the interior with pouring holes. The centre decorated with a warrior in combat with a siren, the sides decorated with four shaped reserves with figures and foliage, with geometric decoration around the rim. The palette of turquoise, blue, yellow, green and white opaque enamels is typical of enamel made in Limoges, France.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"enamel","id":"AAT14910"},{"text":"copper alloy","id":"AAT10942"}],"techniques":[{"text":"enamelling","id":"x37485"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Champlevé enamel; copper alloy","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2009CB7458","2017KE2360"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"10","id":"THES49099"},"free":"","case":"CA10","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Gemellion","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Limoges","id":"x32604"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1200-1250","earliest":"1200-01-01","latest":"1250-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"3.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"25.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured for the Medieval and Renaissance Galleries 2006","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bowl, with spout, champlevé enamel on copper alloy, Limoges, France, about 1200-1250","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Boehm, Barbara Drake, and Taburet-Delahaye, Elisabeth,ed., <u> Enamels of Limoges 1100-1350</u> New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1996"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Marquet de Vasselot,J.-J.,<u> Les gemellions limousins du XIIIe siecle</u>.Paris 1952, cat. no."}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"siren","id":"x38825"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"GEMELLION\r\nA finger bowl\r\nChamplevé enamel on copper\r\nFrench (Limoges); 13th century\r\nSalting Bequest","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["M.574-1910"],"accessionNumberNum":"574","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":1910,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2019LN4572","2019LT5102","2019LW6885","2021MW6183"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2007-07-25","availableToBook":false}}
