By the autumn of 1871 Charles Hengler presented circus in the building and, after a while as the Palais Royal Hengler's, it became known simply as Hengler's. The building stood on the site previously occupied by Argyll House, bought by a wine merchant in 1863, who demolished the house to build extensive wine cellars. The Corinthian Bazaar was built over the cellars in 1867 or 1868 and took its name from the Corinthian pillars, some of which survive today at the entrance of the Palladium Theatre. \n\nExhibitions about world events were extremely popular in the 19th century. This exhibition related to the Siege of Paris which lasted from September 1870 to January 1871, when the city was captured by Prussian forces. As the poster states, maps, models and 'living photographs' of the French and Prussian generals were exhibited, along with a mitrailleuse, or volley gun, the first rapid-firing weapon used as standard equipment during the Franco-Prussian War but discontinued by the French army after 1871. The exhibition also included lectures by the charismatic journalist, author and lecturer Joachim Hayward Stocqueler (1801-1886), who also wrote texts for theatrical exhibitions of battle, including <i>The Battle of the Alma</i> and <i>T</i><i>he Fall of Sebastopol</i> at Astley's Circus, and commentaries for travel presentations at Regent Street's Gallery of Illustration on subjects including the Overland Route to Australia, the Crimean War and the Duke of Wellington.\n\n\n","physicalDescription":"Poster printed in black, blue and yellow ink on white paper, headed PALAIS ROYAL with a royal crest, and illustrated with an engraved image of a volley gun or mitrailleuse, being operated by two French officers.
