As one of the most important Italian designers of the 1980s and 1990s, Versace became famous for his flair and daring, strong colour sense and clean lines. After Gianni's death, his sister Donatella took over the reins of the house of Versace. \r\n\r\nThis suit was given to the Museum by Sir Roy Strong. Author, broadcaster, former Director of the National Portrait Gallery and from 1974 to 1987, Director and Secretary of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Sir Roy was a high-profile figure known for his strong sense of personal style. Sir Roy experiemented with the conservative dress code of suit and tie and he frequented designers known for sartorial exuberance such as Gianni Versace. Versace, a friend of Sir Roy’s, designed this suit expressly for him. The unusual brown pin-stripe linen represents Versace’s love of fine fabrics.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Gianni Versace","id":"A14312"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2012FJ3895"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES309391"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES309391"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES309391"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Handkerchief","id":""}],[{"text":"Trousers","id":""}],[{"text":"Jacket","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1990","earliest":"1985-01-01","latest":"1994-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sir Roy Strong","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This suit belonged to Sir Roy Strong, author, broadcaster, former Director of the National Portrait Gallery and from 1974 to 1987, Director and Secretary of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
