Jacobsen also designed much of the furniture, cutlery, lighting and other fixtures and fittings, including these chairs. All these designs show the designer's mastery of double curvature that lend many of them a bulbous or organic form in contrast to the linearity of the hotel's architecture. The Egg chair was designed for the lobby and reception area, and the high back was conceived to give the sitter a degree of privacy in these public spaces. Grouped together, the chairs created their own space in a big room. The Egg chair became synonymous with mid-century Danish design and is still in production today.","physicalDescription":"Armchair moulded from polystyrene in the shape of a hollowed-out egg, covered with black leather upholstery, on a four-pronged cast aluminium base","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Jacobsen, Arne Emil","id":"A7917"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Fritz Hansen","id":"A15210"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Moulded polystrene, leather upholstery, cast aluminium","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Plastic","id":"THES49026"}],"styles":[{"text":"Scandinavian Modern","id":"x36343"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2008BT7501","2008BT7500","2006BJ7261","2014HC8579"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342444"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES342444"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Armchair","id":""}],[{"text":"Armchair cushion","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Denmark","id":"x28806"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Denmark","id":"x28806"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1958","earliest":"1958-01-01","latest":"1958-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"810","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2018","earliest":"2018-01-01","latest":"2018-12-31"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"1500","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2018","earliest":"2018-01-01","latest":"2018-12-31"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"515","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2018","earliest":"2018-01-01","latest":"2018-12-31"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"280","unit":"mm","qualifier":"Seat height","date":{"text":"2018","earliest":"2018-01-01","latest":"2018-12-31"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"15","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"Designed for the lobby and reception area of the Royal Hotel, Copenhagen, built between 1956 and 1961.","briefDescription":"Egg armchair, designed by Arne Jacobsen, 1958, manufactured by Fritz Hansen, Denmark, moulded polystyrene core, black leather upholstery, cast aluminium swivel base","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Various dates are cited for the design of this chair.
