He had particularly praised bashofu, a cloth unique to the Ryukyuan Islands woven from the fibres of the thread banana plant. In 1946, Taira returned to her native village of Kijoka, in the north of Okinawa (the largest island in the Ryukyu archipelago), determined to revitalise the production of bashofu. Kijoka-bashofu was registered as an Important Intangible Cultural Property in 1974, two years after Okinawa was returned to Japan after the American occupation. Taira Toshiko was made a Living National Treasure in 2000.
