Hitatare were historically worn by high-ranking samurai, but are also a costume found in the classical No theatre, worn by actors playing in such a role. This ensemble may well be a theatrical garment. \n\nFigured silk, of purple-blue twill with supplementary wefts of white forming a pattern of alternating rows of peonies and long-tailed birds (onagadori) with flowers in their beaks. Lining of green silk. On the jacket, red and white kumihimo braids hang from either side of the collar and are threaded through the sleeve ends, while twisted braids are sewn on the front, where the body meets the sleeve, and on the back in the same place and where the two sections of sleeve fabric meet. On the hakama, the same braids are threaded through the hem. Twisted braids are attached at the bottom of the wide side openings, and a pair are sewn on the front in the crotch area. The hakama features two, long off-white sashes (one at the front, one at the back) and fine kumihimo braids are sewn through these where they are attached to the body of the garment. This area has also been stiffened with paper placed betweer the layers of fabric.
