This gift comprises four additional posters, for the HM conferences in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. He has also donated a broadsheet/newspaper produced to accompany his exhibition ‘Announcer’ at the Focal Point Gallery, Southend, in 2014, and a screenprint on a facsimile page of the Kelmscott Press ‘Works of Geoffrey Chaucer’. Mabb regularly reworks the artistic imagery of Marxism to produce starting new configurations. For some years now, he has been engaged in a kind of posthumous collaboration with William Morris, using Morris fabrics and wallpapers as sources of inspiration, and also using them as grounds for paintings or incorporating them into printed works, as here. Mabb’s interest in Morris focuses not only on the design of his patterns but also the inherent contradictions between Morris’s political beliefs – he was a campaigning Socialist - and his practice as a designer and business-man – he made his living creating luxury goods that were affordable only for the upper middle- classes. The posters, and other works in this gift melds Morris’s wallpaper patterns or book designs with geometric motifs taken from Russian Constructivist paintings and pattern designs. Mabb thus unites and contrasts the craft aesthetic of Morris with the machine aesthetic of Constructivism.","physicalDescription":"Poster reproducing an artwork by David Mabb showing a white square overlaid on Morris's 'Fruit' wallpaper.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mabb, David","id":"A19472"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"screenprint","id":"x36290"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Screenprint","categories":[{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Politics","id":"THES48908"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2017JT4101"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"Y","shelf":"70","box":"C"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}],[{"text":"poster","id":"AAT27221"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2015","earliest":"2015-01-01","latest":"2015-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the artist","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"42.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"29.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"david mabb","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Lettered in design"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Austerity and Socialist Strategy.
