She began her stage career in 1911, as a singing fairy in Beerbohm Tree's production of <i>A Midsummer Night's Dream</i>. Being possessed of a fine singing voice, her early roles were mainly musical. In 1919 she appeared in <i>Bethlehem</i>, Rutland Boughton's musical adaptation of the Coventry Mystery Plays which was given as part of the Glastonbury Festival, then a festival of contemporary classical music. The piece proved popular and was presented in London by Barry Jackson's Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company as part of the company's season at the Regent Theatre in 1923.
