The parrot's eye is a cabochon sapphire, his beak is of carved black mother-of-pearl and the perch he rests on is made of gold and patinated silver. The necklace fastens at the back from where four strands of gemstones descend, terminating with a drop of emerald, carnelian, amethyst or citrine. The neckpiece rests on a mount of gessoed wood painted to resemble a page from an old book. It is inscribed after Gustave Flaubert's handwriting with the opening paragraphs of Chapter Four of his short story 'Un Coeur Simple'.
