Beavis visited it in 1875, as he passed through Sinai on his way from Egypt to Palestine. Travellers on this journey usually stopped at the monastery, founded in the fourth century AD as a sanctuary around the site of the Burning Bush, described in the Bible in Exodus: 3\r\nAs well as the drawings and watercolours made on and immediately after this trip, Beavis exhibited a few Orientalist paintings during the late 1870s, but is better known for his landscapes, atmospheric coastal views, and scenes of rustic life.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beavis, Richard","id":"A19763"},"association":{"text":"painter","id":"x36959"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"charcoal","id":"AAT12862"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"AAT15045"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil, charcoal and watercolour heightened with white, on stiff paper","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[{"text":"British School","id":"x30967"},{"text":"Orientalism","id":"x31272"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2008BU1125"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"SC","shelf":"4","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1875","earliest":"1875-01-01","latest":"1875-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"AAT54216"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, Shell International and the Friends of the V&A","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"35.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"52.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed RB, inscribed with title and South East view, dated [...illegible] 25/75","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"According to Rodney Searight: `Bt. fr.
